Pranab Kumar Mukherjee (Bengali Name প্রন্বকুমার মুখোপা ধ্যায়া, they born 11 December 1935 – 31 August 2020) was the thirteenth President of India. Pranab Kumar Mukherjee was awarded the Bharat Ratna on 26 January 2019. He was one of the elderly leaders of the Indian National Congress. The United Progressive Alliance led by the Indian National Congress declared him as its seeker. In a direct contest, he defeated his rival seekerP.A. Defeated Sangma. He took the pledge of office and secretiveness as the thirteenth President of India on 25 July 2012. Pranab Kumar Mukherjee has written the book' The Coalition Times 1996- 2012'.

Bharat Ratna Pranab Kumar Mukherjee was born on 11 December 1935 in an elite Brahmin family of Mirati, West Bengal. His father’s name was Kamda Kinkar Mukherjee and mother’s name was Raj Lakshmi Mukherjee. His father was a freedom fighter who went to jail for the independence of the country. After independence, he was a member of the Legislative Council from 1952-64.

Pranab Kumar Mukherjee had his early education in Veerbhoomi and then completed his graduation from Suri Vidyasagar College. After completing his post-graduation in History and Political Science from Calcutta University, he studied law. In 1963, he started teaching political science in Vidyanagar College. Then became the editor of a Bengali language magazine. After that he became a clerk in the Post and Telegraph Office.

In 1969, he was elected Rajya Sabha member from Bengal state on behalf of Congress. Due to his talent, he became Indira ji’s favorite and was elected Rajya Sabha member 4 times. In 1973, he was made the Union Deputy Minister of Industrial Development Department. He was the leader of the Congress party in the Rajya Sabha from 1980 to 1984. Became Finance Minister on 15 January 1982.

On 31 December, he resigned from his post due to differences with Rajiv Gandhi. Left the Congress Party in 1986 and formed a new party named Rashtriya Samajwadi Congress. In 1989, this new party again merged with the Congress. In 1991, PV Narasimha Rao first made him the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, then Commerce and later Foreign Minister. Was whip in Rajya Sabha from 1996 to 2004. In 1997, he was awarded the title of Excellent Parliamentarian.

Manmohan Singh also made him Defense Minister in 2004 and Finance Minister in 2009. He was also the leader of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha from 2004-2012. On 19 July 2012, he was elected President by defeating opposition candidate PA Sangma. He was the first President to be elected from Bengal. Went into coma after brain surgery on 31 August 2020 during the Covid period. He died of lung infection. He was also a writer of high quality. His works Beyond Survival-Emerging Dimensions of Indian Economy and Challenges Before the Nation are important.

Pranab Kumar Mukherjee remained firm on the path of duty even amidst conflict of ideas. When Pranab da was invited by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh to its program, he happily went and enlightened the volunteers. He was a politician who presented high ideals. Respectful words like His Excellency and Your Excellency were removed from the protocol.

His book The Presidential Years was released in January 2021, at which time Prime Minister Narendra Modi described him as giving love like a father. Today Pranab Kumar Mukherjee is not among us but we should take inspiration from his personality and work and build the India of his dreams.
